Hurricane Season

Hurricane season is quite lengthy, lasting from June 1 to November 30. Most of the hurricane season we are safe from hurricanes; however, just one potentially destructive hurricane can cause panic and upheaval. When Hurricane Matthew was on target to directly hit Florida, Floridians naturally prepared. Securing their homes, installing hurricane shutters, and stocking up on food, water, and gas, and bracing for the worst.

In 2017 Hurricane Irma was on target to strike Florida.  The destruction was widesperad due to the path that the hurricane took.  The insurance costs from this storm were felt for years and have greatly impacted both property owners as well as insurers.

Do not wait to be in the eye of a destructive hurricane to prepare. Before the season begins is the ideal time for homeowners to check over their insurance policies, not during an actual hurricane. As we near the end of this year’s hurricane season, it is ideal for preparing and securing a policy for next year.

Hurricane Insurance with The Gordon Agency

Due to the potential damage hurricanes can cause, it is important to have the right policies and understand what is and is not covered if they occur each hurricane season.

The Gordon Agency will work with you to ensure you purchase the necessary coverages. We also provide you with an understanding of your coverage and any fine print. Having a limit in line with any potential costs involved in repairing or rebuilding is extremely important.

If your standard homeowner’s policy does cover wind damage, there will likely be a separate and higher hurricane deductible. Be sure to know your coverage limits and deductibles. If it does not cover wind damage, a separate policy can be purchased. Flood damage is typically not covered by a homeowner’s policy.  The flood policy is what responds to storm surge.  Flood coverage can be purchased through the National Flood Insurance Program or in some cases a private carrier.

With Florida having the most flood claims in the nation, flood insurance is a wise policy. Your Gordon Agency agent can discuss all of your insurance needs with you. Remember, it is best to be adequately insured before a hurricane escalates and leaves you with a damaged or destroyed home.

Hurricane Deductibles

Florida is the state most associated with hurricanes.  Your hurricane (wind) policy has a hurricane deductible.  Similar to the all other perils deductible, your insurance company will not respond to claims with damage costs lower than the deductible.  You should report all wind losses, even the ones lower than your deductible.  Your wind deductible is per calendar year.  That means it can be reached by adding up losses from multiple events.

A hurricane deductible is often based on a percentage ranging from two to five percent of your dwelling limit.  Depending on the property’s value, the deductible can be a fairly large expense, especially along the coast.

Filing an Insurance Claim After a Hurricane

  • Meet with your Gordon Agency agent to have a policy written before the hurricane season starts.
  • Notify your Gordon Agency insurance agent immediately following the hurricane to allow them to begin the claims process.
  • Document the damage through photos and video.
  • Prevent further damage to your home by covering broken windows. Your insurance company can deny a claim if the necessary precautions are not in place.
  • Keep track of all communication with your insurance company, including dates, names, conversations, and contact information.
  • Have your insurer review the damages before you begin to make plans to make repairs.
  • Get repair estimates in writing from qualified contractors.
