What is Drone Insurance?

Drone insurance works the same way any other insurance policy works. Drone insurance covers damages and liability costs if your drone is lost or in an accident. Drone insurance is a relatively new insurance type that is becoming popular with people in the fields of  law enforcement, homeland security, emergency response, fire and rescue, traffic patrol, maritime, geology exploration, videography, or real estate, you others occupations that may use a drone for business.

Most homeowners insurance does not cover the use of a drone unless piloted by a professional pilot commercially. Drone insurance is not required residentially or commercially in the United States. However, it is a wise policy to have because it can save a lot of money if an accident happens. Drone insurance protects you and gives your clients peace of mind knowing you are insured.

Insurance companies want pilots to have operating manuals, proof of training, and maintenance logs to prove they are a safe flyer lowering the risk they take on insuring you.

Types of Drone Coverage

Liability:

Aviation insurance requires that liability be purchased before adding any other type of coverage. This base coverage will protect your business from bodily injury and property damage claims. Limits typically start at $500,000 but can go much, much higher.

Hull:

Hull coverage’s purpose is protecting the business from the financial cost from any Physical Damage that may occur to its Unmanned Aviation Vehicle. Typically, this coverage is quoted on an “Agreed Value” basis. The business owner, their broker, and the insurance company will agree upon value and quote the UAV based on that valuation. However, it is very important to make esure that the value is accurate.

How to Get a Drone Insurance Policy:

Your insurance company will need to know your name, contact information, which type of coverage you need, the type and value of your equipment, how many flight hours you have, the extent of your flight training, previous accidents or loss, how you will be operating your drone, and your 333 exemption grant.

You Can Lose Your Coverage by Not:
  • Logging your flights and being able to prove what happened during an accident with flight log data.
  • Registering your serial number and putting proper identification numbers on your drone.
  • Logging all battery cycles and maintenance changes.
  • Practicing ethical flight and uploading proof on social media.
How to File a Drone Insurance Claim

If you ever need to file a drone insurance claim, it is essential to notify the proper authorities and your insurance company as soon as the accident of loss occurs. Notate the time, date, and contact information of any witnesses or victims and your insurance company to inspect the damaged property and file a loss with your insurance company in the allotted time frame.
